L to R: Men's B Grade - Otago University; Men's C Grade - Queenstown; Men's D Grade: OtagoThe Otago District Super Champ Eliminations were held at the weekend in Cromwell & Dunedin. Cromwell Squash Club hosted the C Grade with a record 6 Central Otago teams entering with Sunnyvale carrying the flag for Dunedin. The teams were seeded into 2 pools. Queenstown being top seed had a bye on Friday night. Ties were played Friday night at 7.00 pm; Saturday morning 10.00 am; Saturday afternoon 3.00 pm; Semis - Sunday morning 9.00 am & finals Sunday 1.00 pm. All in all, a lot of squash and a lot of tired bodies. 1st & 2nd seeds, Queenstown and Cromwell fought out the final with Queenstown coming out the victors. After being down two games, Patrick Coombe (Queenstown) fought his way back to win 15 - 9 in the fifth - a true final.
Men's B & D Grades were hosted by the Pirates Club with only one tie being played for each grade. The B Grade was between the Otago University and Pirates. Neither team had their top player available with Otago University winning through 4 matches to 1. Otago SC played Cromwell in the Men's D Grade - this was another tight fought battle with the final score 3 - 2 to Otago. Unfortunately, Cromwell's number one player had to retire injured which didn't help Cromwell's cause. Other grades that won through without a contest were: Women's B - Otago University; Women's C - Otago University; Women's D - Pirates; Men's E - Pirates Squash New Zealand are conducting a review of our Competition Framework to ensure squash events are reflecting the latest research on participation in sport, particularly youth participation. We want to ensure the events are attractive to the whole squash community. This is a great opportunity to consider each event and assess whether it remains relevance and to recommend whether an amendment, replacement or removal is warranted.
A part of this research is getting the general idea from our 'Juniors - Masters' players about why it is they play squash, what they enjoy about the current events and what they think could be improved. We have created small (mainly choice) surveys for the different age groups as well as surveys dedicated to specific events that are for all ages of play. These surveys will be used to give us a broad understanding of players motives before diving into further detail. The surveys will also be uploaded onto our Instagram story, where you can vote in a poll format if preferred rather than filling out the entire survey The stories will be active for 24 hours. ![]() The 2021 Otago District Masters was hosted by the Palmerston Squash Club last weekend with tight competition throughout all grades. Although entries were small, this was compensated for by the country hospitality and the fun and competitiveness of all grades. Tracey Flux (Queenstown) defended her 2019 & 2020 title on countback from Ange Button (Otago) & Sam Cross (Pirates). The men's title was another close encounter between defending champion Lee Butcher (Taieri) and Mark Tapsell (Auckland/Otago) - Mark taking the win in five.
